It was about something beyond the gym.
The St. Paul's girls' volleyball team decided earlier this year that this home game would be dedicated to fighting breast cancer.
"This disease has touched a lot of our lives," said team member Alyssa Costancio, 17, who along with teammate Stephanie Cegarra, 17, brought the idea before the entire team.
Everyone was on board.
"Some of the team have had relatives with cancer, so it was a good cause for us to get behind," Costancio said.
The Volley for the Cure volleyball games, all league regulated, showcased St. Paul teams wearing special commemorative T-shirts.
"I'm very proud of the team for doing this," said John Van Deventer, varsity head coach. "They know that there's more in the world than volleyball."
More than $1,300 was raised in ticket and concession sales, a bake sale, T-shirt sale and a 50/50 raffle.
All the proceeds will go to benefit the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation, the world's largest grass-roots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care and energize science for a cure.
Team members baked cupcakes, topped with pink frosting, cookies, brownies and other sweets.
A "Kill Bag" was also passed through the bleachers for monetary donations everytime one of the players "killed" the ball. The term means a hit ball that cannot be defended by the opposition.
"This was a great idea, and we may look into implementing this fundraiser for our program," said St. Joseph's Head Coach Michael Hinton. "I just hope it's a big crowd so that a lot of money is raised."
Although St. Paul lost all three matches, the real winner was the battle against breast cancer.
"I hope we can make this a tradition and help to stamp out this disease," Van Deventer said.
