Swordsmen beat Paraclete 21-7 to improve to 3-1

SANTA FE SPRINGS - By scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, St. Paul High School improved to 3-1 by defeating visiting Paraclete, 21-7, on Friday night.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, St. Paul's Deion Williams returned a

punt 26 yards to the Paraclete 27-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Paul Lopez ran 19 yards into the end zone. Lopez then passed to Matthew Manzano for the two-point conversion and a 14-7 lead.

The Swordsmen's final touchdown came on a 60-yard run by Williams with 6:04 remaining in the game.

Paraclete (2-2) began the game's scoring with a 15-play, 70-yard drive which consumed almost nine minutes of the first quarter and culminated on a 6-yard pass from quarterback Cameron Carvalho to Justin Vargas.

The Spirits' second possession ended when St. Paul defensive back Kevin Romo recovered a fumble.

After an exchange of punts, St. Paul drove 54 yards in five plays with the big

gains being runs of 15 and 22 yards by Blake Griffin which preceded an 11-yard touchdown pass from reserve quarterback Chris Willson to Tyler Carrillo to cut St. Paul's deficit to 7-6 with 2:32 left in the first half.

St. Paul's defense stopped Paraclete at the Swordsmen 2-yard line on the final play of the first half when defenders Adam Padilla and James Fimbres tackled Paraclete's Roosevelt Davis after he had seemingly broken away.
